US By the Numbers - BP Fined
$60Million Oil giant BP has been fined more than $60m after breaching environmental regulations in the US leading to the death of 15
people. The penalty is the largest criminal fine ever imposed against a company for violating the Clean Air Act. BP Products North America
has also pledged to spend $400m on safety upgrades and improvements to prevent future chemical releases and spills.
NZ By the Numbers - "Slippery
character" fined over $180,000 A Manawatu businessman's "blatant disregard of the environment" has earned him more than $180,000 in fines
under the Resource Management Act. Horizons Regional Council successfully prosecuted Ken Thurston with five charges relating to wastewater
discharges from Mainland Meats at Longburn in 2006, as well as three charges of effluent discharge onto land during 2007 and 2008.
NZ By the Numbers -
Fisheries company fined 20,000 for oil spill A Christchurch fisheries company has been fined $20,000 after pleading guilty to discharging a
contaminant into Lyttelton Harbour. The case was heard in the Christchurch District Court last month. Independent Fisheries Limited admitted
that between 100 and 250 litres of fuel oil from a ship it had chartered, the Ivan Golubets, had leaked into the harbour water. This action
contravened sections 338(1B)(a) and 15B of the Resource Management Act 1991.
NZ By the Numbers - Pig effluent prosecution Greater
Wellington is prosecuting Reid's Piggery owners Noel and Elaine Reid and manager Stephen Shivas following an incident in which pig effluent entered
an unnamed tributary of the Parkvale Stream. The incident involved the discharge of pig effluent onto land in a manner which caused ponding and
subsequent run off into the stream. It occurred on 26 November 2008.
NZ By the Numbers - Dairy Effluent Prosecution Greater Wellington is prosecuting Wairarapa landowner Selwyn McLachlan and farm manager Matthew Honeysett following an incident in which dairy
effluent entered a tributary of the Ruamahanga River behind Gordon Street, Masterton. The incident involved the discharge of effluent from a
travelling irrigator, which was discharging to land only 10 metres from the stream in a way that caused ponding and subsequent run off into the
stream. "This incident was foreseeable and preventable," Greater Wellington Environmental Regulation Manager Al Cross said. |
